In an era dominated by digital releases and streaming playlists, Original Gravity Records stands out as a label dedicated to the tactile, groove-driven culture of vinyl. Built for DJs, collectors, and crate diggers, the UK-based imprint has carved out a unique space by delivering modern recordings that feel like lost classics from the golden age of Soul, Funk, Ska, Reggae and Latin grooves.
Founded by producer and DJ Neil Anderson — aka Néstor Álvarez, aka Prince Deadly —the label operates with a clear philosophy: keep it raw, keep it rhythmic, and keep it on wax. Original Gravity releases are almost exclusively on 7-inch vinyl, a format long cherished in DJ culture for its immediacy and authenticity.
In Neil's own words “I had a lot of enjoyment from making this music. I hope that you enjoy listening to it”.
What makes the label special is its ability to blur the line between past and present. Drawing heavily from the aesthetics of 1960s and ’70s, Original Gravity’s catalog is filled with tight breaks, punchy horns, and infectious basslines with a raw authentic production and sound that give it a musical edge designed to slot seamlessly into DJ sets alongside vintage cuts.
The roster reflects this ethos. Artists like Junior Dell & The D-Lites and Donnoya Drake, and with musicians such as Woodfield Rd Allstars aka Boss Foundation, OG delivers tracks that range from raw Ska and Rock Steady covers of hard-hitting floor fillers, to Latin Boogaloo grooves and heavyweight Funk jams, all carefully crafted and curated to make the people rock.
Original Gravity has also built a reputation for quality control. Each release feels curated rather than mass-produced, with attention paid not just to the music but to the artwork and overall quality in presentation. For vinyl enthusiasts, that physical aspect and attention to detail—the sleeve, the pressing etc.—is part of the experience.
In many ways, the label acts as a bridge between generations. It introduces younger listeners to the sounds and structures of classic ska, funk and boogaloo while giving seasoned DJs new tools that carry the same energy as the records they’ve been spinning for decades.
At a time when much of music consumption is intangible, Original Gravity Records keeps things grounded—literally—in grooves.
A modern vinyl label with an old soul, keeping the spirit of funk, breaks, ska and DJ culture alive one 7-inch at a time.
