Smoove, the professional name of Jonathan Scott Watson, is a DJ, producer, remixer and label owner from Sunderland in the North East of England. He began DJing professionally in 1990, playing bars and clubs around Newcastle and Sunderland, and began making his own music the following year. His production draws on Hip-Hop, funk and soul, with sampling and breaks playing a central role in his approach.

One of his earliest releases was “Dubbin' Up The Pieces” by the Ashbrooke All Stars, released on East West Records in 1991. Based on the Average White Band's “Pick Up the Pieces”, the track reached number 16 on the UK Dance Chart. During the 1990s, Smoove also presented the Ultravibe radio show on Sunderland's Wear FM and fronted the Newcastle funk and Hip-Hop group Rubberneck.

Smoove signed to Acid Jazz Records in 2004, releasing the albums Dead Men's Shirts in 2005 and Gravy in 2007. He subsequently released First Class on Jalapeno Records in 2012, a compilation of remixes he had produced for other artists. His remix work has included artists from the Hip-Hop, funk and soul scenes, while his own productions have continued to combine sampled material with live musicians and contemporary production.

He has also run his own labels, including Wack Records and Wass Records. Wack Records has released vinyl and digital EPs built around mash-ups, while Wass Records has focused on original music influenced by jazz, Hip-Hop and funk. Smoove has also released material under the name S.M.O.V.

Smoove is perhaps best known internationally as one half of Smoove & Turrell, alongside vocalist and songwriter John Turrell. The pair began working together in the late 2000s and released their debut album, Antique Soul, on Jalapeno Records in 2009. They describe their music as “Northern Funk”, combining funk, soul, Northern soul, Hip-Hop and other influences.

The Smoove & Turrell project initially began as a production partnership using samples and developed into a full live band. Their subsequent albums include Eccentric Audio, Broken Toys, Crown Posada, Mount Pleasant, Stratos Bleu and Red Ellen.

Alongside Smoove & Turrell, he has continued working as a DJ, producer and remixer. His later remix collections include Recorded Delivery and Heavy Goods, the latter released by Jalapeno Records in 2025. His work continues to move between funk, soul, Hip-Hop, breaks, disco and jazz, reflecting the broad record-collecting background that has been central to his production and DJ work.
