The New Mastersounds

Formed in Leeds, England in 1999, The New Mastersounds have become one of the most respected instrumental funk and jazz-funk groups of their generation. Built around the interplay of guitar, organ, bass and drums, the band has developed a signature sound that draws from the deep grooves of 1960s and 1970s funk while embracing the spontaneity and creativity of live performance.

Inspired by the rhythmic foundations of artists such as The Meters, James Brown and classic jazz-funk ensembles, The New Mastersounds combine tight arrangements with improvisational freedom, creating music that feels equally at home on the dancefloor, the stage and the turntable. Their sound bridges funk, soul, jazz and jam traditions, appealing to both dedicated musicians and groove-focused listeners.

Across a prolific catalogue that includes albums such as 102, Be Yourself, Plug & Play, Made For Pleasure and Shake It, the band has continued to refine its distinctive approach while collaborating with artists including Eddie Roberts, Lamar Williams Jr., Corinne Bailey Rae and Karl Denson. Their recordings capture the energy of a group built around interaction, rhythm and the timeless appeal of instrumental music.

With a devoted international following among DJs, collectors and live music enthusiasts, The New Mastersounds represent an important part of the modern funk revival. Their music celebrates the foundations of classic groove while keeping the spirit of exploration and musicianship alive for a new generation.
