The New Mastersounds are a British funk and soul-jazz quartet formed in Leeds, England, in 1999 by guitarist and producer Eddie Roberts and drummer Simon Allen, with bassist Pete Shand and keyboard player Bob Birch completing the original line-up. The band grew out of Leeds' club scene, initially providing live music between DJ sets at Roberts' club night, The Cooker.

Their early sound was rooted in funk, soul, jazz and boogaloo, with influences including The Meters, James Brown, Grant Green, Booker T. & the M.G.'s and Lou Donaldson. Their first recordings were made during an early rehearsal and released as two limited-edition 7-inch singles on Blow It Hard Records in 2000.

The group's first album, Keb Darge Presents The New Mastersounds, followed in 2000 and helped establish them within the UK's emerging deep-funk scene. Their catalogue subsequently expanded through albums including Be Yourself, This Is What We Do, 102%, Plug & Play, Ten Years On, Therapy, Renewable Energy, Shake It, The Deplar Effect and Old School. The band's official discography currently lists fifteen original studio albums, alongside live albums, compilations and a remix album.

Joe Tatton joined the group in 2007, replacing Bob Birch on organ and piano, establishing the quartet's long-running line-up of Roberts, Allen, Shand and Tatton. The band has also collaborated with artists including Maceo Parker, Fred Wesley, Corinne Bailey Rae, Art Neville, Bernard Purdie and Lou Donaldson.

The New Mastersounds have toured extensively internationally, with a particularly strong following in the United States and Japan. They have also been regular performers around New Orleans' Jazz Fest, and guitarist Eddie Roberts has lived in the United States since 2010.

With their emphasis on instrumental grooves, tight musicianship and classic funk and soul influences, The New Mastersounds became one of the key British groups associated with the modern funk revival. Their extensive catalogue of albums and 7-inch singles has also made them a significant part of the modern DJ and vinyl scene.
