The Pharcyde
The Pharcyde are an important group in the development of early 1990s alternative West Coast hip-hop, recognised for their inventive approach to production, distinctive vocal chemistry, and unconventional perspective on rap music. Formed in South Central Los Angeles in the late 1980s, the group consists of Imani (Slimkid3), Bootie Brown, Fatlip, and producer J-Swift.
The group’s debut album, Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde (1992), introduced their unique combination of playful lyricism, animated performances, and richly layered production. Created during a period of rapid evolution in West Coast hip-hop, the album stood apart from many of its contemporaries through its use of jazz, funk, and soul influences, creative sampling, and a more experimental approach to storytelling. Produced primarily by J-Swift, the record includes the widely recognised single “Passin’ Me By” and remains a defining release from the alternative side of 1990s hip-hop.
With Labcabincalifornia (1995), The Pharcyde moved toward a more refined and atmospheric sound. The album featured production from Jay Dee (J Dilla), whose innovative drum programming and sample manipulation contributed to a more understated and sophisticated musical direction. Tracks such as “Runnin’” highlight the connection between The Pharcyde’s lyrical style and the emerging production techniques that would shape later generations of hip-hop producers.
The Pharcyde’s catalogue reflects a period when West Coast hip-hop was expanding beyond established conventions, with artists exploring more personal, experimental, and musically diverse approaches. Their records remain closely connected to the culture of crate digging, sample-based production, and the creative exchange between hip-hop, jazz, funk, and soul.
For vinyl collectors, Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde and Labcabincalifornia are essential records from the 1990s alternative hip-hop era. Original pressings and reissues continue to attract collectors, DJs, and listeners interested in detailed production, distinctive songwriting, and the evolution of sample-driven hip-hop.
The Funkadoobian offers The Pharcyde vinyl for collectors and music lovers exploring the deeper connections between West Coast hip-hop, jazz-influenced production, and the golden era of sample culture.
