The Soul Investigators are a Finnish funk and soul band formed in Helsinki in the late 1990s. The group began as an instrumental funk outfit, with the original line-up featuring Pete Toikkanen on guitar, Sami Kantelinen on bass, Jukka Sarapää on drums and Antti Määttänen on organ. Producer and musician Didier Selin became an important member of the group from 1998 onwards.

The band drew heavily on the sounds of The Meters, The J.B.'s and Booker T. & the M.G.'s, developing a stripped-down, instrumental approach to funk. They initially recorded under names including Calypso King & The Soul Investigators, The Fabulous Soul Investigators and The Guest Villains.

Their debut album, Soul Strike!, was released in 2001 on New York's Soul Fire Records. The group subsequently established Timmion Records in Helsinki and became the label's house band, recording their own instrumental material as well as backing a succession of international soul and R&B artists. Their second album, Home Cooking, followed in 2002, with Fat Slice O' Funk appearing in 2004.

The Soul Investigators became particularly well known for their collaborations with American vocalist Nicole Willis. Their first album together, Keep Reachin' Up, was released in 2005 and combined the band's raw, vintage-style funk with Willis's soul vocals. The collaboration continued with Tortured Soul in 2013 and Happiness in Every Style in 2015.

The group also worked with Myron & E, recording a series of 45s before the album Broadway was released by Stones Throw in 2013. Other collaborations included recordings with Willie West, whose work with the band appeared on Timmion, as well as instrumental projects featuring musicians such as Jimi Tenor.

The Soul Investigators became one of the key groups associated with Finland's modern funk and soul revival, combining vintage instrumentation and recording aesthetics with original compositions and collaborations with singers from the United States and elsewhere. Their work for Timmion Records also helped establish Helsinki as an important centre for contemporary soul and funk on vinyl.

For The Funkadoobian, I'd particularly highlight their importance to the modern funk revival and their extensive catalogue of 7-inch releases on Timmion Records. Their records sit naturally alongside artists such as Nicole Willis, Myron & E, Willie West and Ernie Hawks, making them an important connection between Finnish musicianship, classic American soul and contemporary 45 culture.
