Al Saxon's “Evil Eye” is a rare and atmospheric 1962 British Piccadilly 45 that sits somewhere between early R&B, rock & roll and the dramatic sounds later embraced by the Northern Soul and Popcorn scenes. Saxon, an American singer living in England, delivers a bluesy vocal over a punchy arrangement, with prominent brass adding a dark, almost sinister edge.
Backed by “What More Can I Say,” a brisker rhythm number, the single captures the transitional sound of early-'60s British pop, when American R&B influences were being absorbed into the emerging UK beat scene. Today, “Evil Eye” is particularly prized by collectors for its rarity and distinctive, moody character.
A genuine crate-digger's find, “Evil Eye” has become a sought-after 45 among collectors of Northern Soul, Popcorn and obscure early-'60s R&B. Its unusual combination of blues, brass and dark atmosphere makes it stand out from the more conventional pop releases of its era.
