A landmark 1970 Atlantic Records release, this double-sided single showcases Aretha Franklin's interpretive mastery across two distinct vocal performances. "Son of a Preacher Man" demonstrates her command of gospel-inflected soul phrasing, while "Call Me" presents a more introspective approach anchored by sophisticated keyboard arrangements and a measured rhythmic foundation.
The B-side has proven particularly influential in contemporary music production. Its harmonic richness and Franklin's nuanced vocal delivery attracted significant sampling interest, most notably in Slum Village's 2004 track "Selfish" (produced by Kanye West), where the original recording was repositioned as a foundational element bridging classic 1970s soul aesthetics with contemporary hip-hop production techniques.
This cross-generational appeal underscores the recording's enduring artistic significance and its role in shaping modern musical dialogue between vintage soul and contemporary urban production.
