Released on Stax STA-0028, “Time Is Tight” was composed by Booker T. Jones for the film Up Tight! (1968). It’s a deeply emotive, cinematic soul instrumental built around warm organ tones, melodic bass, and a stately, unhurried rhythm — one of the group’s most elegant performances.

The song became an R&B chart success and a staple of the group’s live sets, later appearing in numerous films and commercials. Its lush instrumentation and pocket groove have inspired countless covers and samples, including in tracks by DJ Shadow, Large Professor, and several UK rare-groove compilations.

A masterpiece of restraint and mood, “Time Is Tight” demonstrates the MG’s uncanny ability to blend church, jazz, and funk sensibilities into pure instrumental storytelling.
