Bootsy Collins Featuring Fantaazma - Hip Hop Lollipop

A-Side — Hip Hop Lollipop feat. Fantaazma

Bootsy Collins brings his trademark psychedelic funk into the hip-hop era with “Hip Hop Lollipop,” a playful, bass-heavy collaboration with Hamburg artist Fantaazma. Released digitally in February 2022 for Black History Month, the track is essentially a reworking of “Club Funkateers” from Bootsy's 2020 album The Power of the One, retaining much of the original musical foundation while adding Fantaazma's energetic rap performance.

Bootsy's deep, elastic bass provides the foundation while Fantaazma brings a contemporary hip-hop attitude to the track, creating a deliberately futuristic meeting point between P-Funk's eccentricity and modern rap. The record also features two heavyweight musicians from the jazz and fusion worlds: Victor Wooten on bass and Branford Marsalis on saxophone. Wooten gets a particularly prominent bass solo, while Marsalis adds sharp, fluid saxophone lines that push the track beyond straightforward funk.

Bootsy and Fantaazma use the track to celebrate the evolution of Black music, name-checking the connections between funk, hip-hop, fusion and the musicians who helped shape those sounds. The result is knowingly over-the-top, futuristic and fun — classic Bootsy filtered through a contemporary hip-hop lens.

The track was produced by Bootsy and Patti Collins, with Fantaazma credited as the featured artist.

B-Side — Bewise (FredWreck Remix)

The flip takes a different route. “Bewise (FredWreck Remix)” is a remix of “Bewise,” originally associated with The Power of One project and subsequently issued as a bonus track on the Japanese CD edition. The remix comes from Grammy-winning producer FredWreck, bringing a more hip-hop-oriented, West Coast production sensibility to Bootsy's funk.

Where the A-side is colourful, playful and deliberately futuristic, the FredWreck remix strips the presentation into a tighter groove, making the connection between Bootsy's funk and hip-hop production techniques much more obvious.

It's a fitting choice for the flip side: Bootsy's original funk vocabulary is being reinterpreted through the ears of a hip-hop producer, turning the record into something that sits comfortably between funk, breaks and West Coast hip-hop.

The 7-Inch

This particular 7-inch was a Japan-exclusive P-Vine release, issued in November 2022 as a limited edition. It pairs the newly reworked “Hip Hop Lollipop” with the FredWreck remix of “Bewise,” making it a compact snapshot of Bootsy Collins connecting the classic P-Funk tradition with contemporary hip-hop production.

For DJs and crate diggers, it's an especially useful pairing: one side delivers Bootsy's flamboyant, bass-driven funk with a modern rap element, while the other puts the same musical DNA through a hip-hop producer's filter.
