A-Side — Cosmic Blast (U.B. 7" Edit)

“Cosmic Blast” is an early electro and hip-hop classic from Captain Rock, originally released in 1984 during the formative years of electro's development. Built around programmed rhythms, electronic percussion, synthesizers, vocoder/robotic effects and a relentless dancefloor groove, the track captures the futuristic sound that was emerging from New York's early hip-hop and electro scene.

Captain Rock's music sits at the meeting point between electro, early hip-hop, funk and machine-driven dance music. Rather than relying on a traditional live-band arrangement, “Cosmic Blast” puts the rhythm machine and electronic production at the centre of the record, creating a stripped-down, futuristic sound designed for DJs, dancers and sound-system play.

The track became particularly important to hip-hop producers because of its distinctive rhythmic elements and electronic textures. Marley Marl has spoken about “Cosmic Blast” in his Red Bull Music Academy lecture, explaining how he sampled the record's beatbox and manipulated the sound while working on his own production. His account gives a fascinating insight into how early hip-hop producers were beginning to treat existing records not simply as songs, but as collections of sounds that could be sampled, isolated and rebuilt.

This 2020 reissue presents the U.B. 7-inch edit, prepared by Undercover Brother, giving the track a tighter format for the 45rpm DJ environment.

For crate diggers, “Cosmic Blast” is one of those records where you can hear the future taking shape: funk stripped down to rhythm, rhythm converted into electronics, and electronics becoming hip-hop.

B-Side — The Pure (U.B. Dub Edit)

The flip side features “The Pure (U.B. Dub Edit)”, another Captain Rock track reworked by Undercover Brother for this 7-inch release.

The dub treatment places greater emphasis on the rhythmic and electronic elements, creating a version aimed squarely at DJs and dancers. Where the A-side showcases the instantly recognisable “Cosmic Blast” groove, the B-side explores the more stripped-back and spacious side of Captain Rock's electro sound.

“The Pure” was also part of Captain Rock's wider To the Future Shock material, alongside tracks including “Bongo Beat,” “House of Rock” and “Future Shock.”

The result is a useful DJ pairing: a concise electro classic on the A-side and a deeper dub-oriented workout on the flip.

Why It Matters

Captain Rock's records belong to the period when the boundaries between funk, electro, breakdancing and hip-hop were still being invented. “Cosmic Blast” was originally issued in 1984, a period when electronic drum machines, synthesizers, sampling and turntable techniques were rapidly changing the vocabulary of Black dance music.

Its importance was later reinforced by producers such as Marley Marl, whose sampling of the record demonstrates how these early electro records became part of the emerging language of hip-hop production.

The 2020 Fraternity Music Group reissue therefore isn't simply a re-release of an obscure 80s electro 45. It's a document of the point where funk's rhythmic DNA
