Denise LaSalle occupied a fascinating space between Southern soul, blues, and proto-disco realism. Her records often sounded tougher and more emotionally direct than mainstream crossover soul of the same period.

A Man Size Job is driven by confidence and attitude. The groove is deep Southern funk, but LaSalle’s vocal dominates everything — sharp, witty, and completely self-possessed. The song’s sexual politics were unusually bold for the late 1960s, presenting female desire and independence without apology.

That frankness became hugely influential for later generations of R&B and Hip-Hop artists. You can draw a line from LaSalle’s conversational authority to artists like Millie Jackson, Mary J. Blige, and even parts of Southern rap storytelling traditions.

I’m Over You, meanwhile, shows the emotional sophistication underneath LaSalle’s tougher material. The production remains rooted in bluesy Southern rhythm, but the vocal performance carries exhaustion, resilience, and independence all at once.

Both records became favorites among soul collectors and sample-oriented DJs because of:

heavy rhythm sections,
emotionally exposed vocals,
and uncluttered arrangements ideal for looping and reinterpretation.

LaSalle’s catalog never always received the same canonical attention as Motown or Philadelphia soul, but her influence on emotionally direct Black popular music is enormous.
