Desmond Dekker’s recordings with The Aces helped define the moment when ska evolved into reggae, and both It Miek and My Precious Love capture different sides of that transition.

It Miek (mek meaning make in Jamaican patois) became one of the earliest reggae crossover hits in Europe. The track has a bright, almost carefree bounce, but underneath the surface you can hear reggae slowing down from ska’s frantic pace into something heavier and more groove-centered. The bassline sits deeper in the mix, the rhythm guitar chops become more spacious, and the drums emphasize sway over speed.

Part of what made the record internationally important was its unapologetic use of Jamaican dialect. Rather than smoothing out patois for overseas audiences, Dekker leaned into it, helping normalize Caribbean vocal identity in global pop music.

My Precious Love, by contrast, shows Dekker’s softer side. It blends rocksteady tenderness with gospel-inflected harmony and romantic melancholy. The rhythm section is gentler, allowing the vocal melody to float in a way that anticipated lovers rock and smoother forms of reggae that would flourish later in the 1970s.

Both songs became hugely influential in the UK, especially among:

Caribbean immigrant communities,
mod and skinhead scenes,
and later two-tone ska revival musicians.

Without records like these, British pop’s later relationship with reggae — from The Specials to UB40 — would likely have looked very different.
