Description:
Without Your Love by Detroit-born vocalist Diane Lewis captures the essence of mid-tempo, groove-laden soul. Recorded in 1968 during a fertile period for Detroit’s soul scene, the track was produced to emulate the success and smooth polish of the Motown sound. The B-side, Giving Up Your Love, complements the A-side with equally earnest vocals and deep pocket rhythms.
In the A-side track, Lewis delivers a heartfelt performance backed by a rich arrangement—horns, organ, and a rhythm section interlock to create a sound primed for dance-floors and the Northern dinner-club circuit. Though the record didn’t make a major commercial splash upon its original release, it later found a dedicated audience among Northern soul collectors who prize its emotional vocal delivery and production quality.
This particular 7″ re-issue was released by Soul7 (catalogue SOUL7 043EP) on 12 May 2015. It revitalised interest in Lewis’s work and brought a classic soul gem back into circulation for new audiences and DJs alike.
The track reflects a moment of transition in soul music—where live-band aesthetics met tighter, funk-driven grooves and club-friendly tempos. It remains an essential piece for collectors of Detroit soul, Northern exclusives and anyone tracing the evolution of soul into funk-inflected dance territory
