Released on Paramount Records in 1969, “Everybody Knows Matilda” is Duke Baxter’s infectious funk-soul crossover hit. Driven by a playful call-and-response structure and a gritty groove, the track blends Memphis-style horns with psychedelic-tinged production — a sound that places it squarely between pop and deep funk.

Its raw energy and quirky lyrics earned it cult status among Northern Soul collectors and deep funk DJs. The flip side, “I Ain’t No School Boy,” continues the playful funk motif with heavy basslines and Baxter’s blues-inflected vocal delivery.

While not a chart hit, “Everybody Knows Matilda” became a hidden gem of late-’60s dancefloor funk, rediscovered by crate diggers and sampled by underground producers for its punchy breaks and infectious rhythm.
