Description:
Skin is the second studio album by Australian electronic musician Flume (Harley Streten), released on May 27, 2016. The album arrived after a period of intense hype and critical acclaim following his influential self-titled debut, which helped to popularize the "future bass" genre. Skin is a more ambitious and sonically diverse work that showcases Flume's growth as a producer and his willingness to push the boundaries of his sound.
The album's sound is a vibrant and often chaotic fusion of genres, characterized by Flume's signature use of intricate, glitched-out percussion, heavily processed synths, and lush, atmospheric soundscapes. The production is a significant departure from the more minimalist sound of his debut, with Skin featuring a much fuller, more cinematic, and at times, more aggressive style. The album is a testament to his ability to blend pop sensibilities with experimental sound design, creating tracks that are both radio-friendly and artistically daring.
Skin is notable for its extensive list of collaborations with a wide range of guest artists from different genres. Key tracks include the massive global hit "Never Be Like You," which features Canadian singer Kai and became a certified platinum single. The album also features the high-energy, hip-hop-influenced "Smoke & Retribution" with vocals from Vince Staples and Kučka, and the soaring, emotional track "Say It" with Swedish singer Tove Lo. Other notable collaborations include "Tiny Cities" with Beck and "You Know" with Allan Kingdom and Wu-Tang Clan legend Raekwon.
The album was a major commercial and critical success. It won the Grammy Award for Best Dance/Electronic Album in 2017 and was nominated for Best Dance Recording for "Never Be Like You." The album's iconic cover art, designed by Jonathan Zawada, features a striking botanical rendering that beautifully blends organic and synthetic elements, mirroring the album's own musical themes. Skin cemented Flume's status as a leader in electronic music and a pioneer of the future bass sound
