Recorded live in the studio and released on King Records, “Give It Up or Turnit a Loose” is quintessential late-’60s James Brown—tight, tense, and irresistibly rhythmic. The call-and-response chants, syncopated bassline, and percussive guitar form a hypnotic loop that presaged the DJ break culture of the 1970s.

Sampling Legacy: This track’s drum breaks and vocal interjections have appeared everywhere—from De La Soul’s “Bitties in the BK Lounge” to Coldcut’s “Beats and Pieces,” and most famously in Bomb the Bass’s “Beat Dis.” Its 1970 live version on Sex Machine introduced an even more stripped-down groove that became a DJ favorite.
