Description:
One of Joe Tex’s most iconic tracks, “I Gotcha” hit in 1972 on Dial Records and immediately cemented his reputation as a funk powerhouse. The song opens with a call-and-response spoken intro, instantly setting up Tex’s larger-than-life persona. Underneath, tight drums, wah-wah guitar, and percussive horn hits push the groove forward relentlessly.
Its infectious rhythm and confrontational lyrics have made it a favorite for both soul collectors and hip-hop producers. Indeed, “I Gotcha” has been sampled on tracks like Gang Starr’s “Check the Technique”, highlighting Tex’s enduring rhythmic and vocal influence on the genre.
