Description:
We Are Little Barrie is the debut studio album by the English rock band Little Barrie, released on February 7, 2005. The album, which was recorded over 23 weeks, marked the first major project for the trio and helped to establish their unique sound. The band—consisting of Barrie Cadogan (vocals, guitar), Lewis Wharton (bass), and Wayne Fullwood (drums)—worked closely with producer Edwyn Collins, whose West Heath Studios provided the perfect backdrop for their analog, vintage-inspired sound.
The album is a throwback to the gritty, soulful, and blues-based rock of the 1960s, drawing heavily from influences like The Kinks, The Yardbirds, and the early R&B sounds of the UK. The sound is raw and unpolished, with a focus on Cadogan's distinctive, often overdriven, guitar riffs and a tight, funky rhythm section. The production, handled by Collins and the band, used a variety of vintage equipment, including a '62 Gibson ES-330 and old Neumann microphones, to achieve a warm, retro feel.
We Are Little Barrie features a number of tracks that would become fan favorites and staples of their live sets. The album includes the energetic and riff-heavy "Free Salute," the groovy "Burned Out," and the more soulful, melodic "Long Hair." The album's release helped the band gain a reputation as a fierce live act and a purveyor of an authentic, no-frills rock and roll sound. While it did not achieve massive commercial success, it was a crucial debut that laid the groundwork for their career and earned them a loyal following. It is also a significant record in their discography as it was the band's first official full-length release
