“What It Is” sees Little Milton diving fully into funk territory, riding a syncopated bassline and clavinet groove that echoes the influence of Curtis Mayfield and The Meters. His vocal delivery is sharp and rhythmic, reflecting mid-’70s trends while keeping his blues roots intact.

Its tight funk rhythm and bold horn stabs have made it a sleeper favorite for breakbeat DJs and funk collectors. Portions of “What It Is” were sampled by Redman and MF DOOM in unreleased sessions, and the track’s main riff has surfaced in funk compilations such as Funky Blues Masters Vol. 2.
