Lord Finesse's The Awakening is a cornerstone of mid-'90s New York underground Hip-Hop and one of the defining albums to emerge from the Diggin' in the Crates (D.I.T.C.) tradition. Released in 1996, it combines Finesse's precise, sample-driven production with hard drums, jazz, soul and funk textures, creating a sound that is unmistakably rooted in the Golden Era.
The album features an exceptional line-up of New York MCs, including KRS-One, O.C., A.G., Diamond D, MC Lyte, Large Professor, Grand Puba and Sadat X. Tracks such as "True and Livin'," "Hip 2 Da Game" and "Actual Facts" showcase Finesse's ability to turn carefully selected vinyl fragments into sophisticated, hard-hitting Hip-Hop.
The Awakening captures the essence of the crate-digger era: distinctive MCs, rugged beats, obscure samples and meticulous production. It remains an essential record for anyone interested in the D.I.T.C. sound and the art of sample-based Hip-Hop production.
