Description:

“TSOP (The Sound of Philadelphia) / Touch Me in the Morning” by MFSB (Mother Father Sister Brother) is a 7″ single released in 1974 on Philadelphia International Records (PIR 3540). It pairs the group’s defining anthem, “TSOP,” on the A-side with a lush instrumental rendition of Diana Ross’s “Touch Me in the Morning” on the B-side, showcasing the signature sophistication and groove of the Philadelphia soul sound.

The A-side, “TSOP (The Sound of Philadelphia),” is one of the most iconic recordings in 1970s soul and disco history. Written and produced by Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff, and featuring The Three Degrees on background vocals, “TSOP” served as the theme for the television show Soul Train — a groundbreaking celebration of Black music and culture. Built around a tight rhythm section, soaring strings, bright brass, and smooth wordless vocals, the track embodies the lush, orchestrated groove that defined the Philly Sound.

Upon its release, “TSOP” became a global hit, reaching #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, R&B, and Dance charts in 1974 — one of the first instrumentals ever to top the pop charts. Its joyful, polished rhythm laid the groundwork for the coming disco era, influencing producers from Barry White to Giorgio Moroder, and establishing MFSB as one of the most important studio ensembles of the decade.

The B-side, “Touch Me in the Morning,” is a soulful instrumental interpretation of Diana Ross’s 1973 hit. MFSB transform the original’s emotional vocal centerpiece into a cinematic slow jam, driven by warm Fender Rhodes chords, expressive strings, and the ensemble’s famously smooth rhythm section. The track reveals the depth of musicianship within the Philadelphia International studio collective — whose members included Earl Young (drums), Norman Harris (guitar), Ronnie Baker (bass), and Bobby Martin (arrangements).

Together, the two sides of this single represent both the vitality and versatility of the Philadelphia Sound. The A-side celebrates movement and unity through rhythm, while the B-side offers reflection and elegance through melody.

Original U.S. and U.K. 7″ pressings on Philadelphia International Records / CBS are sought after by collectors for their pristine analog mastering and historical importance. “TSOP” remains one of the most frequently referenced and sampled compositions in soul and hip-hop, having been used by artists such as:

Will Smith – “Gettin’ Jiggy Wit It” (interpolated groove)

Faith Evans – “Love Like This” (borrowing rhythmic motifs)

and numerous DJs and producers across house, funk, and disco edits.

“TSOP (The Sound of Philadelphia)” stands as the definitive statement of the Philly Soul movement — a radiant, danceable celebration of musical unity — while its B-side, “Touch Me in the Morning,” showcases MFSB’s unmatched ability to blend jazz, soul, and orchestral pop into a single, emotionally resonant groove
