Japan’s elusive Mister Mushi has built a singular reputation by taking some of the most instantly recognisable vocal moments in recorded music and transplanting them, almost impossibly, onto cowbell-driven hip-hop rhythms. Following the much-discussed Once In A Lifetime — which reimagined a Mobb Deep classic beneath a James Brown hook — comes Sgt. Pepper’s Mardi Gras Band, another masterful exercise in contrast and collision.
Here, Billy Shears’ legendary introduction — a phrase etched into the collective memory of generations — is lifted from its original context and placed over a blazing funk groove, where it feels not only unexpected but entirely natural. It’s another example of Mister Mushi’s strange ability to make the familiar feel new again.
MSH 116, limited as always to 300 copies. The mono flip is far from an afterthought; it’s an essential part of the experience.
