A-Side – Haw-Right Now

Originally appearing on Patrice Rushen’s 1974 debut album Prelusion, “Haw-Right Now” is a deep, groove-heavy slice of jazz-funk built around a superb bass-and-drum foundation. Rushen’s electric piano and keyboards sit alongside the fluid saxophone of Joe Henderson, giving the track a distinctly funky but sophisticated jazz feel. It became a favourite with jazz-dance and rare-groove DJs, thanks to its tight rhythm section and long, groove-focused arrangement.

B-Side – Kickin’ Back

“Kickin’ Back” moves further into chunky jazz-funk territory. Originally issued in 1976 as an early 12-inch single and later appearing on Rushen’s Before the Dawn album, the track is driven by a deep rhythm section, funky keyboard work and a laid-back but highly danceable groove. It is a great example of Rushen’s ability to bridge the worlds of jazz, funk and the emerging jazz-dance scene.

Legacy & Influence

This 7-inch brings together two key examples of Patrice Rushen’s early jazz-funk work. Long before her later crossover success with tracks such as “Forget Me Nots,” Rushen was developing a sound that combined sophisticated jazz musicianship with powerful, DJ-friendly grooves. The BGP reissue makes both tracks available in a compact 7-inch format, retaining the full-length versions rather than reducing them to short edits.
