Description:
The A-side, “When a Man Loves a Woman,” is arguably Sledge’s signature song — a deeply emotional, slow-burning soul ballad with a gospel-influenced vocal performance. Swelling strings, subtle horns, and a restrained rhythm section amplify the song’s emotional intensity. The B-side, “Love Me Like You Mean It,” provides a more upbeat soul groove which for us is the groove on the floor track on this slice of waxy goodness.
Sampling / Influence:
“When a Man Loves a Woman” has been covered countless times and has appeared in numerous films and TV shows. Its slow, dramatic phrasing has inspired neo-soul vocalists and has been subtly referenced in hip-hop and R&B tracks
