Year Released: 1960
Genre: Soul / Jazz / Pop Standard

Description:
This single captures Ray Charles in a transitional phase between soulful reinterpretation and jazz-inflected pop. “Ruby”, originally composed for the film Ruby Gentry, is rendered with lush orchestration and Charles’ unmistakable phrasing, turning the classic into a torch song of deep melancholy. On the flip, “Hardhearted Hannah” revives a 1920s standard with a playful jazz swing, complete with Charles’ mischievous delivery and lively rhythm section.
