Description:
The Ego Trap is the second studio album by the collaborative project Scary Goldings, released on December 12, 2019. The project is a supergroup of sorts, bringing together the rhythmic core of the popular funk band Scary Pockets with the legendary jazz organist and pianist Larry Goldings. The band is a fusion of two distinct musical worlds: the tight, grooving funk and pop sensibilities of Scary Pockets' Jack Conte and Ryan Lerman, and the masterful harmonic and improvisational skills of Larry Goldings.
The album's sound is a vibrant and dynamic blend of jazz and funk. It is entirely instrumental, focusing on the interplay between the musicians. Larry Goldings's organ playing is the album's centerpiece, providing a rich, soulful foundation that is both rhythmically propulsive and harmonically complex. Ryan Lerman's guitar work is tasteful and melodic, while the rhythm section, consisting of a rotating lineup of bassists (Joe Ayoub, Sam Wilkes) and drummers (Tamir Barzilay), lays down a deep, infectious groove.
The Ego Trap is also notable for its use of guest musicians, most notably the legendary jazz guitarist Robben Ford, who provides guest solos on several tracks. His contributions add a layer of blues and fusion to the band's core sound, making the album a must-listen for fans of jazz, funk, and blues guitar. The album was recorded live in the studio, a hallmark of the Scary Pockets project, which gives the tracks a raw, spontaneous energy that captures the feeling of a live jam session. The album's creation and release, like other projects from the Scary Pockets universe, were supported by their dedicated online following, who were drawn to the band's high-quality musicianship and analog-first recording philosophy
