The Bamboos' Medicine Man is a deep, groove-heavy statement from the Melbourne funk and soul outfit, combining vintage-inspired funk with modern production and a strong Hip-Hop sensibility. Released in 2012, the album draws on the rhythmic language of 1960s and '70s soul, funk and R&B while giving it a contemporary edge.

Led by guitarist and producer Lance Ferguson, The Bamboos build their sound around tight drums, deep bass, sharp guitar, horns and soulful vocals. Tracks such as “I Got Burned,” “Where Does the Money Go?” and “Turn It Up” showcase the band's ability to move between heavy funk grooves, soul and dancefloor-ready arrangements.

For crate diggers, Medicine Man is a strong example of the modern funk revival, where musicians take the language of classic soul and funk and rebuild it for contemporary DJs and dancefloors. With its live drums, tight breaks, bass-heavy grooves and carefully arranged instrumentation, it's a record that connects the original funk tradition with the modern breaks, beats and sample culture that continues to drive crate-digging Hip-Hop.
