A-Side – Funky Nassau

The Chuck Boris Trio take The Beginning Of The End’s Bahamian funk classic “Funky Nassau” and transform it into a raw, guitar-led West Coast jazz-funk workout. The original trio version first appeared on their ultra-obscure 1973 album Grooves For Dancing, giving the familiar tune a looser, more psychedelic jazz feel. With its rolling rhythm, deep-funk groove and rocky fusion edge, this is a serious rare-groove cut built for the dancefloor.

B-Side – Shaft

On the flip, the trio tackle Isaac Hayes’ iconic “Shaft”, giving it a distinctly psychedelic jazz treatment. Rather than reproducing the cinematic soul sound of Hayes’ original, Chuck Boris Trio push the tune into jazz-funk territory, creating a stripped-back, groove-heavy interpretation with a much more underground feel.

Legacy & Influence

Both versions originally appeared on the Chuck Boris Trio’s incredibly obscure 1973 album Grooves For Dancing, a record that became a sought-after rare-groove collector’s item. This Selector Series release marks the first time these two tracks were officially paired on 7-inch, remastered for 45rpm. The limited Record Store Day pressing came on orange vinyl with a picture sleeve and holographic sticker, with only 500 copies pressed.
