Description:
April Uprising is the fifth studio album by the Australian roots band the John Butler Trio. Released on March 26, 2010, the album's name is a deeply personal reference. John Butler, the band's frontman, discovered through the TV documentary series Who Do You Think You Are? that his ancestors were involved in the 1876 April Uprising in Bulgaria. This historical connection to a revolutionary struggle for freedom influenced the album's themes of personal and political change.
The album marked a new chapter for the band, as it was the first to feature the new lineup of drummer Nicky Bomba and bassist Byron Luiters. This change brought a renewed energy to the trio, and their chemistry is palpable throughout the record. The sound is a dynamic and eclectic blend of the band's signature roots and folk style with elements of rock, reggae, and funk. The album is a showcase for Butler's virtuosic and intricate acoustic guitar work, which is at the heart of every track.
April Uprising features a number of fan favorites and live staples, including the driving, politically charged "Revolution" and the more introspective, soulful "One Way Road." The album also includes the upbeat and groovy "Close to You" and the folk-inspired "Don't Wanna See Your Face." The album was a commercial success, debuting at number one on the Australian ARIA Albums Chart and achieving platinum certification. It also marked a significant milestone for the band, as it was their first album to reach the Top 100 on the American Billboard Albums Chart, expanding their international reach
