Before Parliament-Funkadelic became a cosmic funk powerhouse, George Clinton led The Parliaments, a Detroit vocal quintet blending doo-wop harmonies with early funk energy. Their breakout hit “(I Wanna) Testify” combines a gospel-inspired call-and-response with tight, soulful horns and an irresistible shuffle rhythm. Clinton’s arrangement hinted at the bold, genre-bending ideas that would later define P-Funk.

A Top 20 R&B and pop hit, “(I Wanna) Testify” became the foundation for the Parliament-Funkadelic sound. It has been covered by The Temptations, Jonelle Allen, and Noel Pointer.
