The Roots' Phrenology is the Philadelphia band's fifth studio album and one of their most adventurous records. Released in 2002, it expands their trademark live instrumentation into a restless mix of Hip-Hop, funk, soul, jazz, rock and electronic textures, with ?uestlove's drumming and Black Thought's precise lyricism at its core.
Tracks such as “Thought @ Work,” “The Seed (2.0),” “Break You Off” and “Water” demonstrate the group's ability to move between hard-hitting Hip-Hop, psychedelic funk, soul and more experimental arrangements without losing their identity. The album also features contributions from Cody Chesnutt, Jill Scott and Nelly Furtado.
Phrenology captures The Roots at a crucial point in their evolution: a Hip-Hop band using live musicianship as a foundation while deliberately stretching the boundaries of what a Hip-Hop album could sound like. For crate diggers, it is an important bridge between the sample-driven Golden Era and the more eclectic, genre-blurring Hip-Hop of the 2000s.
Each record is meticulously cleaned and stored separately in a brand new polyligned inner sleeve, paired with its cover in a protective outer sleeve.
