A-Side – Soul Food
The Zone Identity dig deep into the crates for this hard-hitting cover of Frankie Seay & The Soul Riders’ obscure Florida funk cut “Soul Food.” Driven by a huge opening drum break, deep bass and gritty guitar, the track has the raw, heavy feel of a long-lost early-’70s funk recording. Drummer J-Zone is joined by Ed Littman on bass and guitar, Bennett Paster on organ and Ray May on congas, creating a seriously funky live-band workout.
B-Side – Melting Pot
The flip tackles Booker T. & The M.G.’s’ “Melting Pot,” transforming the 1971 classic into another drum-heavy, percussion-led funk workout. The arrangement also nods to Boris Gardiner’s interpretation, with the groove pushed firmly towards the b-boy and breakbeat crowd. The result is loose, organic and built around the kind of heavy live drums that make this 45 a natural DJ and break-dancing record.
Legacy & Influence
The Zone Identity was a project created by J-Zone to work with different musicians outside his regular band, The Du-Rites. This 7-inch is particularly appealing to crate diggers because it connects two generations of funk: an extremely obscure Florida soul-funk recording on the A-side and a recognised Booker T. & The M.G.’s classic on the flip. Released in July 2018, it was issued as a limited Soul Sauce 45, with a second pressing appearing later that year.
