Description:
A stunning slice of late-’60s West Coast deep soul, “Hey Young Girl” finds Vernon Garrett at the height of his expressive power. Backed by a tight Los Angeles studio band, Garrett delivers a pleading, gospel-infused vocal performance that channels the raw honesty of Southern soul through the polish of LA production. The flip side, “Midnight in the City,” adds a grittier, funk-edged rhythm section, showcasing Garrett’s ability to straddle both the emotive and the groove-driven sides of soul.
Though never a mainstream chart hit, “Hey Young Girl” became a sought-after 45 among Northern Soul and deep soul collectors, earning spins in rare-soul rooms across the UK. Original pressings on Venture are now scarce, prized for both their rich production and Garrett’s impassioned delivery — a perfect balance of sophistication and raw emotion that has cemented his reputation among collectors of authentic late-’60s soul.
